A Bay County home was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived early Friday morning in Fountain, and two grandparents and their two grandsons, ages 11 and 13, died in the fire. Bay County Sheriff’s deputies entered the burning house to try to rescue the family but could not reach them. One deputy was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Two pet dogs also died in the blaze.
Fire officials say the response was complicated by the absence of fire hydrants in the area, which forced crews to truck water to the scene. It’s a challenge shared by many rural communities across the Suncoast, where water supply, not response time, can be the deciding factor in a fire.
Both boys were Bay District Schools students. The district said it is heartbroken and deployed grief response teams to both schools. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
