A morning drive in Brazos County, Texas, turned into a tragedy on August 28 when Jim Hesse lost control of his pickup. The truck crashed through a fence and disappeared into a pond. His wife, Shirley Nallie-Hesse, cannot swim, but she managed to climb out the back window, grab a floating spare tire, and scream for help.
Two young men passing by heard her. Garrett Mallett, 16, and Cooper Matthews, 19, jumped straight into the water and pulled Shirley to the bank. They tried to reach Jim but couldn’t get him free. First responders, including Assistant Chief Katlene Ginn, eventually freed him and rushed him to the hospital, where he died two days later.
The family now calls Garrett and Cooper “angels in disguise.” When relatives told them how proud they were, the young men just said they did what needed to be done. It’s a reminder that heroism rarely announces itself. Sometimes it’s just two kids on the road who see someone in trouble and refuse to keep driving.
