A quiet 1 a.m. shift in Phoenix turned into something Octave Gwin will never forget. The Lyft driver was parked and waiting on a passenger Friday when he watched a car run a red light, strike a pedestrian, then circle back and hit the victim two more times before speeding away. Gwin left his passenger behind and chased the suspect for miles.
The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a sign and a tree. Phoenix police brought in a SWAT team to take the person into custody and say impairment was likely a factor. The victim remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Gwin told reporters afterward, “I actually shouldn’t have done it after talking to 911 dispatch and the police.” But he also said, “Everyone is somebody, and no one should be left like that.”
For those of us here on the Suncoast, where so many neighbors drive for a living and late-night shifts are part of the rhythm of this coast, the story raises a real question. Ride-share drivers spend their nights watching the city move. When they see something wrong, the instinct to act is human.
