An 11-year-old girl in Edmond, Oklahoma, was arrested early Thursday and booked into a juvenile detention facility on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of her 15-year-old brother on September 9. The Edmond Police Department called the situation heartbreaking and said their thoughts are with the family as they grieve. Because of the suspect’s age, the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office said state law sharply limits what information can be released, so many details of what happened remain unknown.
The case raises hard questions, and they’re not just Oklahoma’s questions. How does a firearm end up in the hands of two kids? What does the justice system do with a defendant who is barely old enough to join a youth soccer league? And how does a family even begin to grieve a son while a daughter sits in detention? There are no easy answers, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling something.
