A former Missouri foster parent will not serve prison time after pleading guilty to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Brenda Deutsch was sentenced to seven years, but the judge suspended that sentence on the condition she completes three years of probation. Her foster parent license has also been revoked. The case stems from physical abuse allegations made by a child placed in her care, with the abuse reportedly starting about three years before it was reported in 2024.
The story gained national attention after rumors surfaced that Deutsch traded a child for a monkey. Her defense attorney says that claim was investigated and proven false. Still, the case raises uncomfortable questions. Deutsch was a foster parent to more than 200 children over several decades. During that same period, more than 200 calls were made to a child abuse hotline regarding her. That means the system had more than one red flag. It had hundreds.
The child involved has since been removed from her care, and the school district is credited with reporting the child missing. Deutsch will now be monitored on probation.
