The Columbia Police Department is in mourning after Officer Chris DeLong, 29, was killed in the line of duty Friday. The incident began as a domestic dispute call on Hazelwood Road around 9:27 a.m. The suspect, 33-year-old Adam Dowdy, had left the scene before officers arrived but was later located near a park. Shots were fired, and Officer DeLong radioed in at 10:45 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officer David Demick was also wounded but is reported in stable condition.
Dowdy, who was also killed, had a criminal history that included arrests in South Carolina, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Georgia. SLED and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department are leading the investigation. Police Chief Skip Holbrook addressed the media, saying, “Our hearts are broken this evening,” and asked for prayers for the DeLong family as they navigate a profoundly difficult time.
