Cyclosporiasis Cases on the Rise in Manatee and Sarasota Counties: What You Need to Know

Health officials in Florida are tracking a steady increase in cyclosporiasis cases, and the Suncoast is feeling it firsthand. Manatee and Sarasota counties have reported a combined 22 confirmed or probable cases through August 15th, according to the Florida Department of Health. That’s a significant jump from the 16 cases reported just one week prior. Sarasota County saw the most dramatic spike, doubling its count to 10 cases, while Manatee County holds steady at 12.

The rise locally mirrors a broader statewide trend, with Florida reaching 460 total cases. Lee County, just to our south, is leading the region with 41 cases. Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, which is typically contracted by consuming contaminated food or water. Often linked to fresh produce, the parasite can cause watery diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue that may persist for weeks without proper treatment.

For Suncoast residents, the takeaway is straightforward: practice diligent food safety. Scrub produce under running water before eating or cooking, even items with peels or rinds. If you experience prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, as this illness requires a specific antibiotic treatment. The Department of Health notes these figures are preliminary and may be updated as more reports come in. Have you changed how you handle fresh produce this summer? Let us know in the comments.
