Luigi Mangione, the 28-year-old accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024, pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to two counts of stalking resulting in death. The plea was open, meaning no deal was struck with prosecutors. Mangione admitted he researched Thompson, built a 3D firearm, and carried out the shooting, saying in court, “I knew what I was doing was illegal.” Sentencing is scheduled for December 18.
But the case is far from closed. Mangione’s defense team immediately filed a motion to dismiss his separate state trial, arguing double jeopardy. State prosecutors are pushing back, and jury selection for the state trial is still scheduled to begin September 8. Federal prosecutors are seeking life in prison, despite federal guidelines that suggest a range of 24 to 30 years.
