That bike gathering dust in your garage? For someone on the Suncoast, it could be the difference between keeping a job and losing it. SRQ Bike Boys, a Sarasota nonprofit founded in 2014, collects used bicycles, repairs them, and gives them away completely free to recipients selected by partner organizations. The catch: many of those recipients work evening hours, after the Sarasota County buses have made their final runs. A bicycle isn’t just recreation for them, it’s transportation to a paycheck.
The group recently secured 501(c)(3) status after spending five years operating out of Salvation Army space. That official designation means they can now pursue grants and larger donations, and they’re actively looking for a bigger home. They’re asking the community for gently used or even damaged bikes, adult sizes and children’s sizes both welcome, plus cash contributions and volunteers who can help with repairs. They even offer pickup for donations that can’t be dropped off.
This is grassroots generosity at its most practical. No bureaucracy, no red tape, just neighbors helping neighbors roll to work.
