St. Wilfred’s Preschool in Sarasota celebrated a milestone Thursday morning when 35 preschoolers gathered for the ribbon-cutting of the Liberty Garden, a new outdoor learning space designed to bring education beyond the classroom walls. Working in partnership with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the school created a place where young students can plant seeds, nurture growth, and harvest real vegetables including carrots, cucumbers, radishes, and luffa plants. The garden features patriotic decorations celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, blending civic values with hands-on environmental learning.

Preschool Director Tiffany Brown emphasized that the Liberty Garden will become an ongoing part of the school’s curriculum, giving children direct experience in the complete cycle of food production. Rather than simply learning about plants in a textbook or watching videos, the students will observe their vegetables grow from seeds to harvest, understanding where food actually comes from. DAR member Cindy Millar, who helped initiate the partnership, explained that the organization’s commitment to education aligned perfectly with the preschool’s mission. “One of the hallmarks of DAR is education,” she noted, “and it just fit perfectly with what Tiffany and the preschool wanted to accomplish.”

The organizers hope the Liberty Garden serves as a model for similar community projects, potentially expanding at St. Wilfred’s and inspiring other Suncoast schools and organizations to develop their own educational outdoor spaces. For parents and educators interested in experiential learning approaches, this project demonstrates how nonprofits and schools can collaborate to create meaningful, memorable educational experiences.
