SARASOTA, FL — A year-long investigation into illegal wildlife activity has culminated in the arrest of two men and a minor, facing nearly 100 combined charges for the illegal killing of American alligators across three Florida counties.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced the arrests of Connor Wiegand, 21, of Sarasota, and Reagan Weidner, 19, of Myakka City, on December 19, 2025. A juvenile, whose name has not been released, was also taken into custody.

The Charges

The group is facing a massive legal battle, with a total of 69 felony charges and 23 misdemeanors. Key charges include:

  • Illegal Taking of Alligators: Killing a federally protected, threatened species.

  • Aggravated Animal Cruelty: Details of the killings were described as particularly severe.

  • Weapons Violations: Charges include discharging a firearm from a vehicle and furnishing a firearm to a minor.

  • Animal Fighting: Additional evidence suggested participation in illegal animal combat.

Social Media Led to Arrests

The FWC began its probe in 2024 after receiving reports of alligator harassment in Sarasota County. Investigators eventually secured search warrants for social media accounts, where they reportedly found photos and videos documenting the illegal acts in Sarasota, Manatee, and Hardee counties dating back to 2023.

“This case demonstrates our commitment to protecting Florida’s natural resources for everyone,” said FWC Southwest Regional Commander Major Evan Laskowski. “These individuals had no regard for the conservation rules and regulations of our state.”

Current Status

Both Wiegand and Weidner are currently held in the Sarasota County Jail without bond. While the initial arrests have been made, FWC officials indicate that the investigation remains ongoing.
