Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Launches 2025 “Shop With a Cop” to Support Local Children This Holiday Season

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is kicking off its annual “Shop With a Cop” program, a long-standing holiday tradition that pairs local children in need with deputies for a memorable morning of shopping, encouragement, and community connection.

Now in its 21st year, the program continues to grow thanks to the generosity of local residents, civic groups, and businesses. “Shop With a Cop” was first launched after Hurricane Charley, created as a way to lift children’s spirits during a difficult time. Since then, it has become one of the Sheriff’s Office’s most impactful community outreach efforts.

How the Program Works

Each year, school counselors across Charlotte County identify children who could benefit from the program — whether due to financial hardship, family challenges, or other needs. Those children are then invited to shop with a deputy at a local store, typically receiving a prepaid gift card to pick out holiday gifts for themselves or loved ones.

Sheriff’s deputies, corrections officers, and volunteers spend the morning helping children choose toys, clothing, and essentials, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and encouragement. After shopping, volunteers assist with gift wrapping, and Santa often makes a surprise appearance to greet families.

Building Bonds Beyond the Holidays

While the event provides holiday assistance, CCSO says the heart of the program is about relationships. Deputies use the time to connect with children in a relaxed, positive setting — helping build trust and understanding between law enforcement and the community they serve.

“This is one of the most meaningful events we participate in all year,” the agency said in a statement. “Seeing the joy on these kids’ faces and being part of their holiday memories is something our deputies never forget.”

Community-Funded and Community-Focused

The “Shop With a Cop” program is funded entirely through donations. Local businesses, community organizations, and residents contribute each year to ensure every participating child has the opportunity to shop.

CCSO encourages anyone wishing to support the program to contact the Sheriff’s Office or visit their website for donation information.

A Tradition That Continues to Grow

As the 2025 holiday season gets underway, the Sheriff’s Office expects record participation and is preparing for multiple shopping events across the county. The agency says its goal remains the same as when the program began — providing hope, building connections, and making Christmas brighter for children who need it most.
