Mote Marine Laboratory Relocates Hundreds of Marine Animals to New $130 Million Aquarium
SARASOTA, Fla. — After more than four decades on City Island, Mote Marine Laboratory has completed the move of hundreds of marine animals to its new $130 million Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA) near Nathan Benderson Park.
The move involved sharks, sea turtles, otters, manatees, and penguins—each transported with species-specific care. The new 110,000-square-foot facility features larger habitats, hands-on STEM labs, and exhibits designed to double visitor capacity while expanding marine science education.
The original City Island site will continue as a hub for research and innovation.
