REAL ID and Florida Travel – What You Need to Know (Effective May 7, 2025)
Starting today, May 7, 2025, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is enforcing the long-delayed federal requirement that passengers flying out of any U.S. airport, including those in Florida, must show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or present another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid passport or military ID.
-
REAL ID Enforcement Begins
-
TSA now requires a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID (passport, military ID) to board domestic flights.
-
Applies to all U.S. airports, including those in Florida.
-
-
How to Tell if Your Florida ID is REAL ID-Compliant
-
Look for a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of your Florida driver’s license.
-
Florida began issuing REAL IDs in 2010, so many residents may already have one.
-
-
Getting a REAL ID in Florida
-
Visit a Florida DMV office in person.
-
Bring the following:
-
Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or valid passport)
-
Social Security number
-
Two proofs of Florida residency (e.g., utility bill, lease)
-
-
Cost: $48 plus a processing fee.
-
-
If You Don’t Have a REAL ID
-
Use another accepted form of ID, like a valid passport, to fly.
-
Expect possible extra screening or delays at TSA checkpoints.
-
-
Digital Alternative: CLEAR
-
CLEAR now offers a REAL ID-compliant digital solution.
-
Upload your passport to the CLEAR app for verification.
-
Annual membership: $199.
-
-
Why This Matters
-
The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to enhance security after 9/11.
-
After years of delays, enforcement is now officially in effect.
