Genetically modified mosquitoes are planned for mass release in Florida and Texas. State regulators approved the idea, over the objections of many environmentalists to release 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes.

The Florida department of agriculture and consumer services on Tuesday gave the go ahead to a plan to release the millions of mosquitoes in the Florida Keys.

Genetically modified male mosquitoes, which do not bite people, will be released which authorities say are no danger to the public.

Backlash from conservation groups who are concerned with the release said they intend to bring suit to the EPA for failing to study the environmental impact of the release.

On Tuesday, opponents of the plan protested outside the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District office, to demand its board oppose the trial.
