An iconic reminder of victory in World War Two is down but not out this weekend. Police say a 62-year-old woman slammed into the “Unconditional Surrender” statue along U-S 41 in Sarasota yesterday and city crews have had to take it down for repairs. The 26-foot-high statue of a sailor kissing a girl to celebrate the end of the war attracted passers-by yesterday because city officials decided that moving the Mercedes that piled into it might weaken the structure, so they left it there. Now, the statue’s on its way to New Jersey to be repaired.
