Sarasota county commissioners say a term limits referendum will be needed next year. Commissioners believe a charter amendment limiting them to serving three terms is necessary to clear up confusion over a term-limits case expected to come before the state Supreme Court soon. Now, commissioners here have no limits on how many four-year terms they can serve. Voters in 1998 limited commissioners’ terms to two, but a 2005 court ruling rendered that cap unconstitutional.
