Unemployment numbers from November are out, and southwest Florida continues to chip away at its jobless rates. Charlotte County dropped to 5.3 percent unemployment last month, down from 5.7 percent in October and a full percentage point lower than November of last year. Sarasota County saw similar drops, showing a 4.5 percent rate last month, compared to 4.8 percent in October and 5.4 percent last year. Statewide, unemployment dropped to 5 percent, the lowest since Jan. 2008 and an improvement over October’s 5.2 percent rate as well as last year’s 5.7 percent. Gov. Rick Scott is about halfway to the 1.7 million new jobs he promised when he took office in 2011.
