After a six month investigation in Punta Gorda, police and prosecutors say no criminal charges will be filed against a woman whose fetus was found in her freezer. The stillborn baby had traces of cocaine in its blood when found in the home on Boca Grande Boulevard.

On January 29th, someone called 9-1-1 to say 27-year-old Jessica Smallwood was bleeding heavily. Peace River Medical Center staff determined that she had delivered a full-term baby, which they couldn’t find. A search warrant led to the discovery of a 6 1/2 pound third-trimester female fetus packed in a garbage bag in a freezer in the garage of the home. Prosecutors determined there is nothing the mother could be charged with.
