One councilman calls it an absolute waste. Twenty new driveways that were built by Charlotte County and the City of Punta Gorda as part of the Aqui Esta Drive widening project are now going to be torn out. They were built only ten months ago but now have to be removed to install a new mile-long sidewalk. Planners say the project was planned without a sidewalk five years ago in order to get federal grant money and that they knew then that some driveways would have to be torn out. The driveways are being removed in order to lay underground storm water pipe.
