If you see manatees frolicking in shallow water, keep your distance. That’s because it’s manatee mating season along the Sun Coast and at least one herd is already reportedly hanging out off Siesta Key Beach. Marine biologists warn beachgoers to stay at least a hundred feet away because while manatees are gentle and fun to watch they also weigh upwards of a thousand pound apiece and getting closer could present a danger to onlookers and the animals alike. And no, they’re not trying to beach themselves.
