More than 5,400 catfish in a pond outside the county jail have died, according to Sheriff Bill Cameron.

It appears the fish kill is the resultt of chemicals recently used by a subcontractor as the company clenaed the roof of the jail. Cameron says deputies saw the dead fish Sunday and a massive cleanup program by several inmates began early yesterday. The fish were netted out of the cages, put into a large dumpster and hauled away. Cameron pins blame on the roof cleaning because the water from that job drained into the retention pond. All the catfish in the cages, as well as native fish in the County stocked pond, were killed.
