A man who badly beat a corrections officer during an escape from the Sarasota County Jail has had his life sentence overturned. An appellate court ruled that Jireh Kleppinger was one of a number of Florida juveniles who received life-without-parole sentences improperly. The ruling means Kleppinger, who is now 32, will be returned to Sarasota County to be re-sentenced on a charge of kidnapping a law enforcement officer. Prosecutors said that Kleppinger badly beat a jailer and locked him in a cell during his 1996 jail break.
