Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight would like to announce that there is a new mobile version of the interactive crime mapping program available on the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office website.
The technology provided through a partnership with Crimemapping.com™ makes it easier for citizens to view current incidents in unincorporated Sarasota County. The sheriff’s office has made the web-based tool available since 2011. Information is updated daily and can be filtered by different crime types or viewed within a chosen radius of a desired address.
To download the free new iPhone app visit the App store and search for Crimemapping.com. Search for an address or use the “Agencies” button to see crimes reported to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The web-based program can be accessed from the agency website www.SarasotaSheriff.org under the “Public Interest” tab. Citizens can also sign up to be notified about crimes occurring in a specific radius of an address.
“Making crime data available to the public through this visual tool is another measure of transparency,” said Sheriff Knight. “Crime was down more than 16 percent last year in Sarasota County, and programs like this enhance our ability to build a crime prevention partnership with the community through education and awareness which will help continue that downward trend.”
To protect the identity of victims of certain types of crimes, reports of child abuse, sexual assaults, exploitation of the elderly and stalking will not appear.
