An explosion that sounded like a sonic boom. That’s how residents in the 700 block of Coral Way in Englewood are describing a blast that shook the area Sunday. Investigators today are saying it was caused by a mixture of iron oxide and aluminum thrown into a fire pit — a stunt inspired, they say, by a video on YouTube. The explosion injured an Orlando man, 23-year-old Derek Hirsch, who’s in a hospital today with severe head injuries. Englewood Fire authorities say the mixture creates an effect like a blast furnace and is definitely not for home use.
