A memorial service is planned for Saturday for a true Englewood pioneer who passed away earlier this week. Don Platt was a Sun Coast native who moved to Englewood from Sarasota in 1926 at the age of six. Platt was well-known in the community both as a businessman and a community leader.
He was the founder of Platt’s Government Surplus and the former Lemon Bay Marina, now the Royal Palm. Platt also started the annual Pioneer Picnic as a way of bringing Englewood natives together and was regarded as the founding father of the Lemon Bay historical society. A memorial for Don Platt will be held Saturday at four-thirty at Royal Palm Marina.
