He’s already in prison for life in a series of violent home invasion robberies in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Now, prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against 41-year-old Delmer Smith for the murder of the wife a prominent Sun Coast physician. Smith is being accused of killing Kathleen Briles, who was married to Doctor James Briles, in August, 2009. INvestigators say she was savagely beaten to death with a cast iron sewing machine in the couple’s home. Smith’s trial begins today.
