A controversial gang-related mural in Sarasota’s Rosemary District will soon be no more. The mural was created on the side of the Tube Dude factory at Central Avenue and tenth Street last month as part of the Sarasota Chalk Festival, which brought murals to a number of buildings. This one, however, depicting two hands in a gang sign with the words “Fast Life” painted on the fingers — drew community unrest because it was seen as glorifying gang activity in an area that is a gateway to Sarasota’s majority black Newtown neighborhood. The building’s owner says he’ll paint over the mural.
