Suspected serial killer Daniel Conahan, Jr.’s filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus with the federal court. The North Port Sun reports the petition is a civil action entered when a criminal defendant has exhausted all his court appeals. The 59-year old was sentenced to death in Charlotte County in December 1999, for the kidnapping and murder of Richard Montgomery, whose body was found near North Port in 1996. Among the issues cited in the filing: ineffective assistance of counsel, issues with evidence and testimony, and prosecutorial misconduct. The 59-year old was suspected of several murders in the region in the 1990’s, but he was never charged with any other crimes.
