Preparing for a cold snap. After days of balmy weather, this is looking to be the coldest day of the winter so far and tonight, temperatures are headed for freezing or below. Area food growers are getting moisture in the ground and covering plants with cloths in preparation for tonight’s cold weather. As far as your house plants go, experts say whatever you do, turn off your irrigation system tonight. They also recommend covering your plants with cloth, not plastic, since plastic conducts the cold. And stake down that cloth or weigh it down with bricks because cold air can seep in and damage plants at ground level even when they’re covered.
