How much does it take to hunt iguanas — on half an island? In the case of Gasparilla Island: $56,000. That’s what the Charlotte County Commission is agreeing to pay the U-S Department of Agriculture to track down iguanas on the Charlotte side of Gasparilla Island. Lee County hires its own iguana trapper to eradicate the lizards on its portion of the island. The USDA is being credited with uprooting up to 4,000 iguanas and Commissioners were told the project is working: the Gasparilla iguana population is definitely shrinking.
