Englewood, FL – A tough decision to cancel the November 19-22, 2020 event was made by the Englewood Beach Waterfest (EBW) Board of Directors on Monday, September 14th. “After examining and reviewing the statistics, health concerns, social distancing guidelines, and other factors involved, we made the call to not hold the November 2020 event during the current Covid-19 environment.” said Steve Gardiner, President of the Englewood Beach Waterfest Board of Directors.” Although we have not seen an increase in Covid-19 cases locally, as residents and business owners ourselves, we were faced with insurmountable obstacles that prevent us from holding a high-caliber, quality event this year.” Gardiner further explained.
It takes hundreds of dedicated volunteers, and thousands of hours to organize and plan the multiple community activities that are associated with the Top 20 Southeast Tourism Society (STS) event every year. The week culminates with the keystone feature, the OPA World Championship Race.
“The event and race day sponsors are a committed group, and we really want to do a special shout out to our legacy sponsors of Waterfest. These individuals and local businesses continue to support this community-wide event year after year. The 2019 race set a major record in both event attendance, and race team registration with over 75 boats racing last November. Many teams, and businesses had pledged their support again for 2020 knowing what a tremendous economic boost (nearly $8 million for 2019) Waterfest is for the Englewood and surrounding area. That just encourages us to come back even stronger with a dynamic November 2021 event.” stated Board 1st Vice President Ray LaBadie.
The EBW Board already has several events planned for 2021, and are anticipating another record-setting Waterfest event next November. Supporters are encouraged to visit the website and social media pages regularly to stay up-to-date on information and resources for upcoming events.
