Police in Longboat Key are trying to seize a condo unit after a short-term tenant claimed they found multiple hidden cameras at the home, being used to spy on tenants. It’s only the second such case of real estate civil forfeiture brought to court in Sarasota and Manatee Counties since 2001. In that case 16 years ago, police in North Port attempted -and were successful- in seizing an alleged drug house. The owner of the Longboat Key condo has already claimed a homestead exemption, which, under the Florida constitution, protects him “from forced sale under process of any court.” Wyatt Natt, the owner of the condo, has been charged with four counts of felony video voyeurism. In both cases, prosecutors are claiming that the alleged crimes could not have been committed if the suspects did not own the homes that law enforcement was trying to seize.
