An 86-year-old pedestrian was killed in a crash Tuesday on Veterans Boulevard in Port Charlotte. According to FHP officials, 27-year old Benjamin Umbras was driving on Veterans Boulevard when 86-year old Ralph Smith stepped out into traffic, directly into the path of the vehicle. Troopers say Umbras swerved to try and avoid Smith, but hit him, a curb, and went into a ditch following the accident. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, Umbras suffered minor injuries.
