Insurance Claims Piling Up In Wake of Irma

Insurance companies have received more than 21,000 claims from Southwest Florida homeowners in the wake of Irma, totaling more than $4.57 billion. As of the end of last week, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said more than 700,000 people statewide had submitted claims to insurers. Only about 10 percent -69,400 of those- have been denied. The bond rating agency Fitch says estimated losses for the insurance industry will likely climb to as high as $50B. Data company CoreLogic puts the figure at closer to $65B. One insurance company- the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corporation- alone projects $1.23 billion in claims from about 70,000 policyholders.
