A man who had been running a flophouse in Nokomis has been arrested. 53-year old Theodore White faces a charge of maintaining a nuisance dwelling. Police say the home hasn’t had running water or electricity since White and three others began squatting there. Since the start of the year, Sarasota sheriff’s deputies have been called out to the area 93 times. Just in the past month, a man was hospitalized in a fight over drugs and money, and a number of people were arrested on drug charges. The actual property owner, who said she abandoned the house, told police she was aware of the situation and knew White was squatting there. According to a charging affidavit, she refused to maintain the property and doesn’t have the money to go through with the eviction process.
