Caspersen Beach is off limits to wading and swimming until further notice. The beach has been tested for bacteria and officials deemed the amount of enterococcus bacteria unacceptable. That type of bacteria can come from a number of natural and man-made sources. Those include pet waste, livestock, birds, wildlife (land-dwelling and marine), stormwater runoff, and human sewage from failed septic systems and sewage spills. No spills, though, have been reported within a mile of the beach over the past month. Signage advising beachgoers not to enter the water will stay in place until testing results meet the EPA’s recreational water quality standard.
