North Port city commissioners have unanimously voted to terminate the contract of city attorney Mark Moriarty. Mayor Linda Yates, who led the push to fire Moriarty, called the vote “an item for the betterment of the community and this commission, that it’s time to make a change with the city attorney.” Commissioner Chris Hanks- although he voted to fire Moriarty- said Tuesday night that he would have rather waited until his evaluation, which was coming up in August. Moriarty became the first in-house city attorney in 2014. The commission later voted to offer Assistant City Attorney Amber Slayton the interim city attorney position while they search for a permanent replacement.
