Did you know that the Punta Gorda police department offers free checks on your home while you’re away on vacation? The service is called Away From Home, and the department has volunteers who check daily on homes whose owners are out-of-town, no matter how long. Police say that it helps keep an active presence at a residence that might otherwise be targeted by burglars. More than 700 people have signed up for the program so far, but Punta Gorda police want that number to increase, given the thousands of snowbirds who reside part-time in the region.
