A new deadline has been set in the ongoing battle to redraw Florida’s congressional districts. The Florida Supreme Court has given state Democrats until noon on Friday to respond to a motion filed yesterday by Republicans asking that a Leon County circuit judge be allowed to consider the redistricting plans. However, that judge, Terry Lewis, expressed concern over what he feels is a lack of direction from the state Supreme Court. Lawyers for the Senate want lawmakers to keep working on a map, but House attorneys think a court will ultimately have to draw a new map. Senate leaders also repeated calls to reconvene the special redistricting session. Lawmakers have until mid-October before taking up redrawing the state’s senatorial map.
