Florida DEP’s been very quietly considering the idea of leasing 6630 of the Myakka River State Park’s almost 38,000 acres for grazing by domesticated livestock. According to the Herald-Tribune, the idea may getting attention because of Gov. Scott and the Legislature’s expressed desire to see what commercial revenue can be generated by parks as a means of cutting the amount of tax dollars devoted to their upkeep and maintenance. Previous efforts to commercialize Florida state parks, including adding golf courses and private campgrounds, were buried by strong public opposition.
