Northport’s City Commission decided to keep its police dispatch service rather than consolidate it with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The Herald-Tribune reports Police Chief Kevin Vespia recommended dispatchers be kept local after presenting commissioners with the up and down sides of consolidation. Sarasota County handles 911 calls for Sarasota Police and all of the fire departments, including North Port’s. The county’s building a 911 center close to I-75.
