Nokomis Beach’s still closed for swimming because of high levels of the enterococci bacteria. has The Herald-Tribune reports the beach has been closed since last Thursday. A cause for the problem hasn’t been found yet, but officials say several things can trigger it, including algae on shore that can breed bacteria; rough surf that churns up sand, releasing bacteria; and heavy rains that wash wildlife and pet waste into the water. Spilled sewage has been ruled at as a cause. Results from another round of water testing are expected tomorrow afternoon.
