A resource officer at Venice High School did the right thing yesterday morning.

The officer saw a student get into a black Mercedes-Benz in front of the school. Video identified the student, and she had not attended class all day.

The student’s mother told police her daughter had stayed at the YMCA Youth Shelter in Sarasota. Officers learned the student mentioned to friends that a man named Andre worked there.

The resource officer learned Andre drove a black Mercedes, and he had not worked all day.

A detective discovered the girl had grown close to this man during her stay. The girl told the detective that if Humphrey got caught in this relationship, then he could lose his job, lose his kids, and go to jail.

The girl went to Venice Bayfront Regional Health for a sexual assault test. Police took 33-year-old Andre Humphrey into custody.
