Attempts to get members of the Florida House and Senate to call for their own special session on Stand Your Ground laws have fallen short. On Monday, the Secretary of State received signatures from more than 30 lawmakers requesting the session which was enough to trigger a poll of both chambers. Three-fifths of the members would have to approve a special session, but the number fell well short. House Speaker Will Weatherford tweeted after the count that the state supports self-defense laws and said the state is “spending way too much” on additional security costs for the Dream Defenders who continue to hold a round-the-clock vigil inside Governor Scott’s office.
