With word the city’s property values are up, Punta Gorda’s City Council’s looking into lowering its mill rate. They raised it last year by 0.5% in the face of public opposition, to 3.2462, but earlier this week a majority agreed to cut it to 3.1969. A mill is $1 in taxes /$1,000 of a property’s taxable value. When the final decision is made, TRIM, or Truth in Millage notices, will be mailed to homeowners in August. The Charlotte County Property Appraiser’s Office, this week reported that Punta Gorda had $2.3 billion in gross taxable value, up 1.7% from the previous year. The council’s expected to vote on a tentative mill rate at its July 10 meeting.
