Florida’s Health Department wants you to remember to be careful at the beach or in water with high concentrations of red tide algae. Adverse health effects on humans and pets can be prevented by staying away from affected areas until the wind moves the algae further offshore. They recommend wearing shoes when walking on the sand, to prevent puncture wounds from the spines or bones of dead fish. If you have chronic respiratory problems like asthma, avoid red tide areas.
