Sunshine Lake Algae Non-Toxic, Says State
The algae in Sunshine Lake in Port Charlotte is not toxic:
That's the word from the state, during a public Q and A held along with the health department and county officials last night. People living along the lake have complained of skin irritation, respiratory issues and nausea since the blue-green algae has grown. Tests by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection show it is non-toxic, though. Some don't think the county is doing enough to combat the problem and want more tests done. Currently the county is going through the bidding process to dredge the lake of the algae later this year. The clean up could cost up to $1-million.
