Debby Destroys Local Sea Turtle Nests
Researchers from Mote Marine Laboratory say Tropical Storm Debby took a major toll on sea turtle nests along the sun coast. Mote spokesperson Hayley Rutger says their volunteers reported a number of sea turtle nests that were washed out by heavy surf, exposing eggs. Rutger says 82-percent of the recorded nests between Longboat Key and Venice lost the yellow stakes that marked where they were. Researchers say they may never know the full extent of Tropical Storm Debby's impact on the local sea turtle populations.
