Southwest Florida unexpectedly added jobs in January, a time of year when that rarely happens. New numbers show the unemployment rate on the Sun Coast was down one-tenth of one percent in January. That decrease was fueled by the addition of an estimated one thousand jobs in the area. Historically, that month is virtually never a time when unemployment goes anywhere other than up. In fact, this marks the first time in twenty years that the Sun Coast saw fewer jobless people in January.
